Relief in Sight as SGN Gas Works on Weymouth Way Near Completion
Weymouth, 24 May 2025 — After weeks of disruption, frustration, and heavy delays, motorists in Weymouth can finally look forward to smoother journeys as SGN’s emergency gas works on Weymouth’s West Way road near completion. The gas company has confirmed that, barring any further unforeseen complications, the roadworks will be fully completed and the road fully reopened by Friday, 30 May.
Since the work began earlier this year, drivers travelling between the Manor Roundabout and Chafeys Roundabout have faced consistent hold-ups due to two-way traffic lights installed to ensure safety during the repair operations. The lights, though manned daily from 7am to 7pm to help manage traffic flow, have caused significant congestion on one of the town’s busiest roads, sparking frustration among residents and commuters alike.
Now, after what many feel has been a long and inconvenient wait, the end is finally in sight.
The works were initiated after a series of gas escapes were detected in the nature reserve next to West Way Road. Given the safety risks posed by the damaged gas main, SGN said immediate action was required.
Simon Collins, spokesperson for SGN, provided the following update on the 21st May:
“We’ve been carrying out urgent replacement work on our gas main within the nature reserve next to Weymouth Way following a series of gas escapes.
To keep the public and our colleagues safe while we work, two-way traffic lights are in place on Weymouth Way between the Manor Roundabout and Chafeys Roundabout. To try and minimise any impact on traffic, these lights are manned from 7am to 7pm.
This urgent replacement work has been challenging, with unforeseen delays due to specialist parts required to complete the job. While waiting for these parts to arrive, our engineers have been monitoring the gas escapes.
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we expect to complete our work and re-open the road on Friday 30 May.
We’re sorry for any disruption this essential work has caused and would like to thank the Weymouth community for its patience and support.”
Local feedback during the works has been mixed. While many residents understood the importance of the repairs, others expressed exasperation over the length and impact of the disruption. Long queues during peak hours and altered travel plans became a daily reality for drivers.
As the finish line approaches, the community is breathing a collective sigh of relief. Once completed, the repaired gas main is expected to provide long-term safety and reliability for the area, reducing the risk of future emergencies and associated disruption.
Until the scheduled completion date, SGN continues to urge drivers to plan ahead and remain cautious while the final stages of work are underway. After weeks of delays, inconvenience, and detours, Weymouth can now look forward to returning to normal — just in time for the busy summer season.
