In a recent announcement, the organisers of the long-awaited Weymouth Carnival disclosed that despite initial hopes, the event would not be returning as planned. Operational planning hurdles and escalating costs have regrettably led to the cancellation of the much-anticipated carnival.

The Weymouth Carnival held significant cultural significance in the lineup of summer events for the town until its cessation in 2008. However, in a heartening turn of events, a dedicated group of volunteers emerged in late 2022, forming The Weymouth Carnival C.I.C. with the noble objective of resurrecting the beloved tradition.

With lofty aspirations, The Weymouth Carnival C.I.C. aimed to revive the carnival spirit on the 14th of August 2024. However, despite their fervent efforts, the reality of operational intricacies and financial constraints posed insurmountable challenges, forcing the organization to make the difficult decision to cancel the event.

Amidst the disappointment, a glimmer of hope emerged as Redlands Leisure & Community Park extended a generous offer, providing their land as a venue for the Weymouth Carnival. In a testament to resilience and community spirit, the Weymouth Carnival is set to embark on a new journey, albeit in a different format.

On the 14th of August 2024, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, Redlands Leisure & Community Park will host a family fun day in lieu of the traditional carnival. This marks a significant pivot for the Weymouth Carnival, promising a day filled with joy, laughter, and cherished memories for attendees of all ages.

The decision to transition to a family fun day reflects the adaptability and determination of the Weymouth community to preserve its rich cultural heritage while navigating the challenges of the modern era. It symbolizes a new chapter in the storied legacy of the Weymouth Carnival, one characterized by resilience, innovation, and unwavering community support.

As preparations for the family fun day at Redlands Leisure & Community Park gather momentum, anticipation mounts among residents and visitors alike. It is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Weymouth community, which remains steadfast in its commitment to celebrating unity, tradition, and the enduring spirit of carnival festivities.

The Weymouth Carnival is extending an invitation to the community for volunteers to assist with marshalling duties during the event on August 14th, 2024. If you’re interested in contributing to the fun day by lending a hand, please reach out via email to hello@weymouth-carnival.uk.
